Autumn Roof Cleaning & Gutter Checklist for Cork Homes
Before winter rain: how to spot roof moss, overflowing gutters and blocked downpipes around Cork — and how to choose a safe cleaning plan.
Autumn roof and gutter care in Cork: what to check before winter
October and November bring falling leaves, wetter weather and shorter days. Around Fermoy, Mallow, Mitchelstown, Youghal and the wider Cork area, roof moss and blocked gutters are common things homeowners notice once the rain arrives.
A roof does not automatically need cleaning every autumn. The important question is whether moss and debris are creating a drainage problem, whether the roof material can be cleaned safely and whether conditions are right for any proposed treatment. Here is a practical checklist for deciding what needs attention.
1. Look from the ground, not from the roof
Check your roof from a safe place. Look for thick mats of moss sitting on tiles, dark patches, plant growth near valleys and visible debris around gutters. Moss alone is not proof that a roof is leaking. However, loose moss and leaves can make their way into gutters and downpipes, where they may restrict drainage.
If you notice loose tiles, sagging areas or water entering the house, speak with a competent roofing professional about repairs rather than booking a cosmetic clean first.
Avoid climbing on a wet or mossy roof. Working at height requires proper safety precautions and appropriate access equipment.
2. Watch the gutters in heavy rain
One of the easiest signs of a blocked gutter is water overflowing over the edge instead of passing to the downpipe. Other warning signs include:
- Water spilling down an outside wall.
- Plants, moss or leaves growing visibly from the gutter.
- Staining below joints or outlets.
- Dripping behind the gutter.
- Downpipes that appear blocked even when the gutter above is full.
A blocked downpipe can remain unnoticed until heavy rain. If you are unsure, ask for the guttering and downpipes to be checked while arranging other exterior work.
3. Understand the difference between cleaning and treatment
Roof moss removal can involve more than one step. Depending on the roof, an appropriate plan may include careful physical removal of thicker moss, cleaning where suitable, clearing resulting debris and a roof-appropriate treatment.
Softwashing generally uses a lower-pressure approach and cleaning solutions selected for the surface. It is not the same as using high-pressure jet washing indiscriminately on tiles or slate. Some roofs are too fragile or otherwise unsuitable for certain methods.
Any biocide or cleaning product should be used according to its label and safety requirements, with particular care around drains, plants, pets and watercourses. Application and results depend on weather conditions. Treating a roof does not mean moss can never return.
4. Is autumn a good time to have a roof cleaned?
Autumn is a good time to inspect and plan roof and gutter maintenance because rainfall can reveal drainage issues and leaves build up quickly.
Actual cleaning and treatment should only proceed when roof conditions, temperatures, drying time, weather forecast and safe access allow it. For example, a wet, windy day is not a sensible time for exposed roof work. It may be better to clear accessible drainage issues promptly and schedule the roof treatment for a suitable weather window.
Beware of promises that every roof can be washed immediately, regardless of material or conditions.
5. Ask what the quote includes
When comparing roof cleaning quotations in Cork, ask these questions:
- What cleaning method is proposed for my roof material?
- How will safe access and surrounding property be protected?
- Does the quote include removal and disposal of debris?
- Are gutters and downpipes included or quoted separately?
- Is a post-clean treatment suitable and included?
- What can I realistically expect the roof to look like afterwards?
- What happens if weather delays the work?
Price depends on roof size and pitch, moss build-up, roof condition, safe access, drainage and the agreed scope. For that reason, a quote based on clear photos and a proper assessment is more useful than a universal price quoted without seeing the property.
6. Consider the roof and gutters as one job
There is a simple reason to ask about gutters when arranging roof moss removal: loose moss can end up in the gutter. Cleaning the roof but leaving a blocked outlet is unlikely to solve the original drainage concern.
MJ's Cleaning Services covers suitable roof moss removal, softwashing and gutter cleaning work across Cork and Waterford. Each service and treatment is assessed individually and the quote should state what is included.

7. A quick photo checklist for a useful quote
You can often speed up the quotation by sending:
- A photo showing the entire roof from a safe spot.
- Close-ups of moss or staining taken from the ground.
- Photos of overflowing gutters or problem downpipes.
- Your town or Eircode and whether the property is one or two storeys.
- Any known roof material, access restrictions or fragile areas.
Please do not climb onto the roof to get photographs.
